WordPress Membership Sites

What would be the best option for a membership site through a Wordpress site?
Plugin or server side script?

Gene,

I guess you're asking about whether to use a downloadable plugin vs using a hosted 3rd party service.

Both have pros and cons.

A downloadable plugin gives you more control over the software, it is installed on your own web site, etc. Cons are: You will have to know a little bit about management (so, you can't be a total dummy). But costs will be pretty low.

A hosted service takes out a lot of the hassle and could be more newbie-friendly, but you have very little control over the software, and your content is locked into a 3rd party system. Also lot more expensive.

Many more things to consider. But those are the general main points.

Both have their places, but when it comes to low-cost membership sites, but if you are even a little bit web savvy, then your best bet is to go with your own web site hosting a WordPress blog and a membership plugin.

Any recommendations for a decent WP membership plugin? Looking for something to offer sign-ups into Free area and paid upgrades areas made available.

Hi Gene, it really depends on what you are lokking for. For Wordpress there are really on 3 that I believe do what they say on the tin.

Entry Point for someone new to membership sites : HintsandTricks Hq : Wordpress emember plugin - They also have a simple affiliate plugin and estore plugin too fo not a lot of cash. Easy to implement too

Next Step up : Wishlist Member (though I have found it can be a pain to make sure that all the content is properly locked down) so there is a bit of a learning curve for someone new to membership sites

One that I am particularily impressed with is Digital Access Pass, especially as it has an 'instant affiliate' element, locks down content , including files , and has a drip feed function.

I only recommend stuff that I have used and like.
I have tested more than a dozen membership site scripts, loads of affiliate scripts, a 100's of wordpress plugins to create models that can be rapidly implemented
